Water Line Replacement & Repiping
Your main water line carries every drop of water into your home. When it leaks or wears out, you may notice a soggy yard, weak water pressure or a surprise water bill. BMS Heating and Cooling repairs and replaces water lines and repipes homes in Hurricane and nearby communities. Call (304) 757-4822 or book online.
Main Water Line: From the Meter to Your House
The main water line runs underground from the water meter to the point where it enters your home. BMS replaces main water lines itself, using trenching machines and boring when needed. In most cases, the line on your side of the meter is the homeowner’s responsibility. Check with your water provider to confirm.
Signs of a Water Line Leak
- Wet or soggy spots in the yard, or a patch of grass that’s greener than the rest, along the path of the line
- Low water pressure throughout the house
- Higher water bills without a change in how you use water
- The meter keeps moving when all faucets and appliances are off
- Water in the basement or crawl space near where the line comes in
- Discolored or rusty water
Old Pipe Materials
Many older homes still have galvanized steel pipe, which corrodes from the inside over time, causing low pressure, rusty water and leaks. Others have polybutylene, a gray plastic pipe common in homes built from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s that is known for failing. If your home has either, replacement is often the better long-term choice than patching leaks.
In-Home Repiping
When the pipes inside your home are corroded, leaking or undersized, repiping replaces the old supply lines with new ones. We repipe with both copper and PEX (flexible plastic tubing), and we’ll explain which fits your home and budget.
How the Process Works
- Inspection: we confirm where the problem is and check the condition and material of your pipes.
- Options and price: we explain whether repair or replacement makes sense and give you the price before any work starts.
- The work: we shut off the water and replace or repair the line. For main water lines, we dig with our own trenching machines, or use trenchless boring when needed, then connect the new line from the meter side to your house plumbing.
- Testing: we turn the water back on, check for leaks and confirm pressure.

Water Line FAQs
How do I know if my main water line is leaking?
Common signs are a wet or soggy spot in the yard, lower water pressure, a water bill that jumps without a change in use, or the water meter moving when every fixture is off.
Who is responsible for the water line?
Generally, the utility is responsible up to the meter, and the line from the meter to the house is the homeowner’s responsibility. Check with your water provider to confirm for your property.
Should I repair or replace my water line?
A single leak on a newer line can often be repaired. Old galvanized or polybutylene pipe, or a line with repeated leaks, is usually worth replacing. We replace main water lines ourselves, and we’ll explain the options.
PEX or copper for repiping?
We repipe with both copper and PEX, and we’ll go over the pros and cons of each for your home.
How do you replace a main water line?
We dig a trench with trenching machines, and when needed we use boring to run the new line underground. We’ll explain which approach fits your property.
Is a water line leak an emergency?
A major leak can waste a lot of water and damage your home or foundation. Shut off the main valve if you can and call (304) 757-4822. Our 24-hour emergency service covers plumbing.
