Heat Pump Services

A heat pump heats your home in winter and cools it in summer, so in West Virginia it hardly gets a day off. BMS Heating and Cooling repairs, maintains and installs heat pumps for homes across Greater Teays Valley. We’ve been family-owned and local since 2004. We install Ruud systems, and we install and service all major brands. Call (304) 757-4822 or book online.

How a heat pump handles our winters

Instead of burning fuel, a heat pump moves heat. In summer it pulls heat out of your home, and in winter it pulls heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside. On our colder mornings, many systems lean on backup heat (often electric heat strips, or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup) to keep up. That’s normal in short bursts. If the backup heat runs constantly, your electric bill will show it, and that’s a sign something needs attention.

Signs your heat pump needs service

What a repair visit includes

We’ll ask what you’ve noticed, then check both the indoor and outdoor units. That generally means the thermostat and controls, the reversing and defrost functions, the refrigerant operating pressures, the electrical parts and connections, airflow and filters, and the backup heat. We’ll explain what we find and price the repair before any work starts.

A residential service call is $99, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If your system quits at night or on a weekend, we offer 24-hour emergency service.

Heat pump maintenance

Because a heat pump runs year-round, it benefits from two checkups: one in spring before cooling season and one in fall before heating season. Our Twice-a-Year maintenance plan does exactly that, starting at $20 a month, with priority scheduling and 10% off service calls. Between visits, change or clean your filter regularly and keep leaves, snow and shrubs clear of the outdoor unit.

New heat pump installation

When a heat pump is worn out, or you want to move away from an older furnace and AC setup, we install a new system sized for your home, whether that’s Ruud or another major brand. New systems we install come with a 1-year BMS labor warranty and a 10-year manufacturer parts warranty when the equipment is registered. We’ll give you a free replacement estimate over the phone and can talk through options like pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace. Wisetack financing lets you spread out the cost. Learn more on our HVAC replacement page.

No ductwork in part of the house? A ductless mini-split is a type of heat pump that doesn’t need ducts.

Heat pump FAQs

Do you repair all heat pump brands?

Yes. We install Ruud systems, and we install and service all major brands.

Is it normal for my heat pump to steam in winter?

Yes, a short burst of steam during a defrost cycle is normal. A unit caked in ice that doesn’t clear is not, so call us.

Why does my heat pump blow lukewarm air?

Heat pump air often feels cooler than furnace air even when it’s working fine. If the house can’t reach the thermostat setting, or the backup heat runs all the time, have it checked.

Can I switch from a furnace to a heat pump?

Often, yes. Call us for a free replacement estimate over the phone, and we’ll talk through whether a heat pump fits your home. See HVAC replacement.

How often does a heat pump need maintenance?

Because a heat pump heats and cools, it works all year. A spring and fall tune-up is ideal, which is what our Twice-a-Year plan covers.
