Furnace Repair
When the furnace stops on a cold Putnam County night, you want someone nearby who answers the phone. BMS Heating and Cooling is a family-owned company in Hurricane that has repaired furnaces across Greater Teays Valley since 2004. We install and service all major brands of gas and electric furnaces. Call (304) 757-4822 or book online. If it can’t wait, we offer 24-hour emergency service.
Signs your furnace needs repair
Most furnace failures give a warning first. Call us if you notice any of these:
- Cold air from the vents while the thermostat is set to heat.
- The furnace starts and stops over and over without warming the house.
- New noises like banging at startup, squealing, scraping or rattling.
- Some rooms stay cold while others are fine.
- Gas bills climbing without a change in how you use your heat.
- A burning smell that doesn’t go away after the first few days of the heating season.
- The blower won’t shut off, or the furnace won’t start at all.
If you smell gas, don’t try to fix anything. Leave the house, then call your gas company or 911 from outside. Once it’s safe, call us to repair the furnace.
Things to check before you call
A few simple checks can save you a visit:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, set a few degrees above room temperature, and has fresh batteries.
- Check the air filter. A clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off.
- Make sure the furnace power switch, which often looks like a light switch near the unit, is on, and that the breaker hasn’t tripped.
- Make sure the vents and returns in your home aren’t blocked by furniture or rugs.
If the furnace still won’t heat, it’s time for a technician.
What happens during a furnace repair visit
Our technician starts by asking what you’ve noticed, then checks the system step by step. That generally means checking the thermostat and controls, the ignition and flame, the blower and motor, the wiring and safety switches, the filter and airflow, and the venting. Once we find the problem, we explain what’s wrong and what it will cost to fix before any work starts. You decide whether to go ahead.
A residential service call is $99, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For nights and weekends, call (304) 757-4822 and ask about emergency service.
Repair or replace?
Many neighborhoods around Hurricane, Teays Valley and Scott Depot were built in the 1990s and 2000s, and plenty of those homes still have their original furnace. If yours is that age and keeps breaking down, a repair may only buy you a season. We’ll give you an honest answer either way. If a new system makes more sense, we install Ruud or another major brand, with a 1-year labor and 10-year parts warranty (parts with registration), and give free replacement estimates over the phone. Learn more about HVAC replacement, and know that Wisetack financing lets you pay over time.

Prevent the next breakdown
Most no-heat calls we get in the first cold week trace back to a dirty filter, a worn igniter, or a part that a tune-up would have caught. Our maintenance plans start at $20 a month and include a heating tune-up before winter, plus a discount on service calls.

Furnace repair FAQs

Do you repair furnaces you didn’t install?
Yes. Yes. We install Ruud systems, and we install and service all major brands, gas and electric.
My furnace is old. Should I repair it or replace it?
It depends on the age, the repair cost and how often it has been breaking down. We’ll give you an honest answer, and if replacement makes more sense, we offer free replacement estimates over the phone. See HVAC replacement.
Can you come out at night or on a weekend?
Yes. We offer 24-hour emergency service. See emergency HVAC service or call (304) 757-4822.
How do I keep my furnace from breaking down again?
